This Tumkur family gifts sight to 700 persons

TUMKUR: Thanks to one family’s devoted work in Tumkur, around 700 people have received the gift of sight.
The members of Nama Srirangashetty (NS) family have achieved this by effecting 350 pair of eye donations in the past two decades.
The torch bearer has been N N Sridhar, a former Lion’s Club member and owner of a jewellery shop in Tumkur.
Besides, the family has also ensured that around 10,000 people have pledged their eyes for donation.
Soon, recognising their feats, the Lions International Eye Bank, Bangalore, awarded a testimonial of appreciation in promoting eye donation.
And inspired by their service, about 200 women from Mythri Sangha led by Lokeshwari Prabhu, also voluntarily pledged their eyes recently.
The family’s work also drew the attention of former minister Sagaranahalli Revanna’s younger brother Mahadevaiah and scientist C P Sadashivaiah, winner of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) award,who offered to donate their eyes.
It all started when Sridhar organised eye camps for the poor through Lion’s Club and helped 12,000 people get their eyes operated for defects.
Later, he set up the N S Eye Collection Centre under N S Charitable Trust with the help of his family members.
The centre has collected the eyes of a boy as young as 12 years and a man as old as 103 years after their death with the help of a network of 22 ophthalmologists including Dinesh, Vishwanath, G S Swamy and others, to who he expressed his gratitude.
And when he is away, his wife Lakshmi and son Nagadeesh co-ordinate eye collection, says Sridhar.
The 60-odd members of NS family too have pledged their eyes and Sridhar’s 86-year-old father Narayana Shetty’s eyes were collected when he died a couple of years ago.

Artificial Cornea Grafting
On Apr.21,2011,an artificial cornea was grafted on a garment warehouse worker,Shri.Kedar of Bhosari,Pune,Maharashtra.This was brought from Massachusetts eye and ear infirmary , United States Of America and was grafted at K K Eye institute. The eye is responding well to the treatment.
I think this is a ray of hope to some of the corneal blind persons of India.

नेत्रदान , त्वचादान आणि देहदान
दृष्टिदान दिवशीच श्रीराम दत्तात्रेय येरकुंटवार यांचे
नेत्रदान , त्वचादान आणि देहदान
काल दृष्टिदान दिवस होता.
सकाळी ७ च्या आधीच ठाण्यातील भास्कर कॉलनीत राहणाऱ्या श्री.गोपाळ जोशी यांचा मालाडहून दूरध्वनी आला की त्यांचे सासरे गेले आणि नेत्रदानाची कार्यवाही पूर्ण झाली असून आता त्वचादानासाठी शीवहून डॉक्टर येत आहेत.
५ दिवसांपूर्वी जोशींनी सासऱ्यांची प्रकृती गंभीर असल्याचे सांगून मालाडच्या आसपासच्या नेत्रपेढ्यांचे दूरध्वनी क्रमांक विचारले होते.
२ वर्षांपूर्वी जोशींच्या मातोश्री गेल्यावर त्यांचे नेत्रदान जोशींनी केले होते.
आता त्यांचे सासरे अत्यवस्थ असतांना त्यांच्या वारसांनी नेत्रदानाचा दृढ संकल्प केला होता.
श्रीराम दत्तात्रेय येरकुंटवार यांचे निधन होताच त्यांच्या पत्नी उज्ज्वला तसेच कन्या प्रज्ञा आणि स्मिता यांनी नेत्रदानाचा संकल्प पूर्ण केलाच परंतु त्वचादानही करून नंतर देह्दानही केले.
त्यांची ही कृती उल्लेखनीय आहेच परंतु अनुकरणीयही आहे.
नेत्रदान तरुण मित्र मंडळाने तसेच त्वचादान शीव रुग्णालयाने घरी जाऊन स्वीकारले.देह सोमैया वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयाकडे सुपूर्द केला गेला.

Artificial corneas in few years ?
Surely this is a significant and hopeful news for the corneal blind brethren but I don't think that anything positive may emerge out at least for the next 10 years.So we should not keep mum on eye donation and let us continue to strive very hard to promote this noble cause. Artificial corneas are likely to become a reality in the next few years

प्रभाकर पणशीकर यांचे नेत्रदान
नुकतेच ज्येष्ठ कलाकार प्रभाकर पणशीकर यांचे निधन झाले. त्यांच्याबद्दल भरभरून लिहिले गेले.'त्यांच्या इच्छेप्रमाणे त्यांचे नेत्रदान झाले' असे एक वाक्य फक्त काही वृत्तपत्रांत आले. अशा थोर व्यक्तीने सामाजिक भान ठेवून नेत्रदानाची इच्छा ठेवणे आणि त्यांच्या वारस कुटुंबियांनी ती जाणीवपूर्वक पूर्ण करणे ही विशेषच गोष्ट असून ती तेवढीच अभिनंदनीय अन अनुकरणीयही आहे.
त्यांच्या तमाम चाहत्यांना या निमित्ताने कळकळीची विनंती करावीशी वाटते की त्यांनीही या राष्ट्रीय गरजेचा गांभीर्याने विचार करून तसेच मानवतावादी दृष्टिनेही नेत्रदानाचा संकल्प करावा.
असा संकल्प म्हणजे त्यांना वाहिलेली कृतीशील श्रद्धांजलीच ठरेल.
